The best hair & beauty Instagrams to follow in 2019

New year, new me… Isn’t that the motto? While we’re already at the end of January, there’s never been a better time to get inspired about the year ahead. Especially in terms of hair and beauty.

And we don’t know about you but one of our favourite past times is scrolling through the ‘gram and checking out what’s trending from our favourite Insta-famous hairdressers and makeup artists. They’re pretty much celebrities in their own right now - plus they always offer breakdowns of the products, which is important so we can go buy the makeup and haircare straight afterwards.

While there are some many talented people in the industry, we’ve rounded up a few homegrown and international ones that we’re obsessed with - and that we think you should be following for your 2019 looks.

Max May - @maxmade

Hailing from Sydney, Max is a mainstay in the Australian makeup scene - and he also does hair as well! Working with massive Australian brands, nailing editorial work and painting the faces of some of our fave homegrown babes like Elle Ferguson and Elyse Knowles - he basically can do no wrong. You can always count dewy, flawless base and great brows with Max’s looks. Plus, he shares a lot of his favourite, tried and tested products.

Emma Chen - @emmachenartistry

Genuinely probably one of our favourite hair & makeup artists at the moment - and for the foreseeable future - Emma is creating wearable yet powerhouse looks. Seriously, just take a look at her feed and you’ll be obsessed - she’s also a babe herself. A constant collaborator with Australian online retail stores like Runway Scout and Princess Polly Boutique, you’ll be surprised where you’ve seen her work before. The best thing about her though is that she has a lot of great videos for both hair and makeup tutorials, complete with product recommendations.

Katie Jane Hughes - @katiejanehughes

Her Instagram bio reads: ‘glossy skin always’ - and it’s true. The New York City-based makeup artist is known that the ultimate glowing skin base - you know that ‘no makeup’ makeup base - and focussing instead on unique and bold eyes and lips. She is proof that we’re moving away from that full faced glam that was so big only a few years ago. Her page is full of awesome looks that she demonstrates on her own face but her work has graced the pages of Elle, Harper’s Bazaar and glamour. Rosie-Huntington Whiteley also loves her.

Jen Atkin - @jenatkinhair

She’s been in the hair industry for ages but Jen got her break after being the go-to hairstylist for the Kardashians. She’s still doing amazing hair looks for Kendall - along with it-girl style set Bella Hadid, Hailey Bieber, Kaia Gerber but she’s now also got her own hair care brand, The Ouai and online platform, Mane Addicts. The true definition of hard working and constant innovator, she’s just inspiring to follow. Plus, Jen and her husband, photographer Mike Rosenthal, are constantly hanging out with John Legend and Chrissy Teigen… why wouldn’t you want to see that?

Hung Van Ngo - @hungvanngo

He counts Emily Ratajkowski and Selena Gomez as regular clients, and has painted the faces of basically every one of our favourite women - and for good reason. Hung has a natural instinct to be able to really see a face and enhance its features, which is an invaluable skill for a makeup artists. we’ve  yet to see a look that didn’t suit its owner. Even with his bolder looks, it’s all about the concept of looking like yourself… but better. Think about some of your favourite looks on red carpets recently - it’s probably been created by this beauty genius.

Mary Phillips - @maryphillips

If you follow Kendall Jenner on Instagram, you probably already know Mary or at the very least you’ve seen her work. She’s the go-to for the second youngest of the Kardashian/Jenner clan but has also dabbled with her sisters as well. She counts Chrissy Teigen and Bella Hadid among other big names as regular clients - and we’ve yet to seen those women look anything but flawless.
